APA (or the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association) style is a particular way of formatting a research paper as well as a particular way of citing sources. APA is an "author date" system which is most commonly used in the social sciences such as psychology and sociology, but also in the fields of communications (unless one is working on rhetoric within communications), education, nursing, and social work. While this guide provides some general tips for citing sources and offers a brief sample of some frequently used citations, it is not intended to be inclusive nor should it replace a good handbook or instruction in a particular course. For more advanced help, please consult APA Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition) or your instructor.
