To honor, remember, and celebrate our loved ones who have passed the Latin American Student Organization (LASO) has built an ofrenda or altar. This ofrenda was built with great care and respect for the traditional elements and symbolism found in Mexican, Latin American, and Indigenous cultures.

Papel picado represents wind, one of the four natural elements present on a traditional altar. Candles represent fire and are placed to light the way for returning souls. The bright orange and yellow cempasúchil, or Mexican marigold, symbolizes the sun and carries a strong scent believed to guide loved ones back to the altar. While full meals can't be included, there are loved ones’ favorite refreshment or packaged sweets placed as an offering. The altar also includes elements like copal or incense, which connect us to Indigenous practices that predate the Spanish influence on Día de los Muertos.

Join in this tradition by visiting the ofrenda at the Phillips Library October 27th through November 3rd. All are welcome to share and reflect on the legacy and beauty of remembering those in our campus family that have passed.
