The term Latinx began appearing online in the early 21st century as a gender-neutral alternative to the term Hispanic. Hispanic encompasses people from all Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain. While Latino has been used instead when speaking of those with Latin American roots, the -o at the end of the word denotes a male gendered person.
More recently the term Latine has gained popularity as a gender-neutral term that is easier to pronounce than Latinx.
