Research 101: Saving and Citing

Research 101

Save and organize your finds to make them easy to use. Then, correctly cite sources in your work.

Saving the Correct Link

If you want to save the link to an article or book found in the library databases, you need to copy the permalink. A permalink can be found in all library databases and provides a permanent (stable) link back to your source.

The link in the address bar is unlikely to work later. Similarly, bookmarking the page will save the wrong link. Don't save the wrong link and lose your research!

Keep Track of Your Research

Keep notes as you research for maximum efficiency.

  • Track what searches you have tried and where. This prevents duplicate searches and helps you identify what you haven't tried yet.
  • Keep track of citations as you find/create them. Only do the work once!
Try It!

Use the Database Research and Citation Log to assist in keeping track of your research.

Or take advantage of technology with a citation manager!

Citation Managers

There's an app for that!

Citation managers are tools that make it easy to keep track of your research and citations.

  • Save citations for articles, books, websites, and more
  • Generate in-text citations and bibliographies in documents
  • Use browser extensions to capture citations from a web page
  • Organize resources with collections, tags, and notes

Check out our guide to citation managers to get started.

Citations Matter

Citations play an important role in scholarly work, connecting different works in a larger conversation. Citing sources in academic writing also avoids plagiarism. There are several different types of citation styles which are each used in different fields.
