Academic Support Center FAQ

Hour vs. Half Hour Appointments

In general, most appointments at the Academic Support Center should be scheduled for one hour. This gives both the tutor and student enough time to look through relevant course materials, define an objective for the session, and effectively work together. That said, some sessions with a Writing Specialist or Academic Coach may be scheduled for  half hour (See guidelines below).

Writing appointments can be either half hour or one hour:

  • In half hour appointments, a writing specialist can typically work through one page of text or work through a specific citation question in APA/MLA formatting or do some initial brainstorming for an assignment. You are always welcome to make an hour-long appointment.
  • All other appointments with a writing specialist should be scheduled for a full hour.
  • If you’re working on an assignment longer than 6-7 pages, a writing specialist may need to set up additional one-hour long appointments with you to go over the full assignment.

Initial Academic Coaching appointments should be one hour. An academic coach can advise whether follow up appointments should be half hour or a full one hour.

Subject tutoring is one hour by default (both for peer tutoring and specialist tutoring).

How to make a 1-hour appointment

For Subject Tutoring: all appointments are automatically scheduled to be 1hr long.

For Writing appointments and Academic Coaching: Students have the option to schedule either one hr or half hour appointments. The system defaults to the shortest appointment possible (in this case half an hour).

To make a full 1 hour appointment: When first scheduling your appointment, click the end-time drop down menu and choose an hour from the start-time.

You can also edit the appointment end-time after you've scheduled by Modifying it. (As long as that time is still available and no one has booked the half-hour immediately after your appointment).
