What is a recitation?

  • Recitations are a weekly opportunity to actively engage in course material.
  • Recitations are driven by the participants. Please come with questions and ready to engage.
  • A recitation is there to help you obtain clarification of concepts and problem-solving processes.
  • Recitations can address course information that is unclear.
  • Recitations complement the work you’re doing in class. Recitations are a safe space in which asking questions for clarification on big ideas, their applications, and specific problems is encouraged.
  • Recitations can test your understanding – feel free to help fellow classmates with questions you’re able to accurately answer.

Where to go for a recitation

To check which room a recitation is held in, click on your appointment window or check the "Recitation" schedule. On Academic SupportNet each Recitation's name will include a room number (ex: "MTH 1100 Recitation in INST 316" or "A & P I Recitation in JCH 112").

How can I tell how many recitations I’ve attended?

Students are expected to keep track of the recitations that they’ve attended throughout the semester and to ensure that they’ve met the minimum attendance requirements for their course. Students are also always welcome to attend more than the minimum required.

Additionally, course instructors will receive an official Recitation Attendance tally from the Academic Support Center during Midterms and before Final Exams. Students can ask their course instructor to cross-reference their attendance with one of those official tallies.

To ensure up-to-date credit for attendance, students are asked to sign up for each Recitation that they plan on attending on Academic SupportNet, and to attend the recitations that they sign up for. Doing so allows students to check their unofficial attendance by using Academic SupportNet:

  • At the top left corner of the “Recitation Schedule" on Academic SupportNet, students can click the "previous week,” button to go back, all the way to the beginning of the semester.

  • Student can then count their previous appointments, which will appear as a blue box on the schedule

  • Importantly: this method will only track appointments that a student signed up for. It will not provide an accurate attendance tally if a student signed up for a Recitation and then did not show for that recitation. It may also not include recitations that a student attended but did not sign up for.
